Why Aikido for children?
Aikido is a special form of martial art. Its name means 'the Way of Harmony' and we work together while we practice.
It is not an aggressive martial art and its aim is not to injure the other person but to blend with and physically control the other person. Children who have trained in Aikido often develop a calm mind that helps them better develop at school and in other parts of their lives.
Over time children develop skills to not only protect themselves physically but to diffuse bullying situations. They learn respect ... of others and themselves. Aikido allows them to be more aware of their surroundings and a better understanding of their physical strengths and limitations.
Aikido teaches that remaining calm and relaxed is superior to anger, force and aggression; control is better than unrestrained action.
Aikido will help children improve their:
- physical coordination
- interaction with other children
- self discipline
- ability to respond to instruction
The dojo (training centre) environment is a positive, caring area where black belt instructors supported by dedicated dojo volunteers teach with humour, kindness, respect and control. Classes normally have a ratio of 5-6 students per adult or less.
